Kopriva, Sharon

About the Artist

Splitting her time between the contrasting landscapes of Houston, Texas and Hope, Idaho, Texas-born artist Sharon Kopriva crafts a distinctive visual language that bridges the physical and spiritual worlds. Kopriva earned her Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Houston in 1981. Her career gained significant momentum following her inclusion in the landmark 1985 Fresh Paint exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Since then, her work has been showcased globally, with major exhibitions at institutions such as The Menil Collection in Houston, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, and the National Museum of Peru in Lima.
For more than three decades, Kopriva has seamlessly fused two- and three-dimensional forms, frequently uniting papier-mâché with repurposed found objects to create deeply textured, evocative pieces. Her creative trajectory is heavily informed by a fascination with pre-Columbian Peruvian cultures, a profound examination of her Catholic faith, and the atmospheric, mystical qualities of the Pacific Northwest wilderness. In her printmaking, her resident Peruvian hairless hounds frequently populate her images, serving as hauntingly expressive allegories for the broader human condition.
